100 Years Ago Today - April 18, 1906

The mighty San Andreas Fault (800 miles of it) heaves and slides, causing havoc up and down the California coast and a magnitude 7.8 earthquake (one of the largest ever in the U.S.). Just twenty minutes north of Stinson Beach, in Point Reyes National Seashore, the Earthquake Trail takes you to the precise location of the fault.

"This is one of the places where the slip is the largest in the 1906 earthquake," says John Boatwright with the U.S. Geological Survey.
